The University of Alabama offers more than 650 student organizations, providing something for all interests. Students are encouraged to join at least three organizations, balanced across three pillars, to maximize their campus experience.
Pillar 1: Fun and community
Students are encouraged to join at least one organization based on personal interest to help establish a balance between work and play.
Benefit: In addition to strengthening well-being, this type of organization involvement can help students build a healthy friend group of like-minded people. Building community helps new students find their footing while allowing UA’s large campus to feel more like a home.
Purpose: To protect mental health by reducing stress and preventing academic burnout.
Pillar 2: Professional and academic
It’s also important for students to join a club specific to their major or future goals. This bridges the gap between what is learned in the classroom and real-world application.
- Purpose: To build a professional network, develop industry-specific skills, and enhance the student’s resume.
- Benefit: Joining a club specific to professional aspirations can help students gain access to alumni networks, guest speakers, and potential internship postings. This is also a good way to demonstrate genuine interest and engagement in the field to future employers.
Pillar 3: Service and Philanthropy
Students are encouraged to join an organization designed to give back to the local community.
Benefit: Our data shows that students who serve the community during their time at UA achieve better GPAs and are more likely to graduate. In addition, community service provides great opportunities for teamwork, leadership and project management skill development.
Purpose: To foster empathy, civic responsibility, and perspective by working toward a cause greater than oneself.
Get connected at Get On Board Day
The best way to explore different student organizations is through Get On Board Day (GOBD), UA’s biannual involvement fair held on the Quad. During the event, hundreds of student organizations set up display tables where they provide a glimpse of what membership in their group entails.
Students attending GOBD are encouraged to explore the entire event. Along with the opportunity to learn more about different programs around campus, Get On Board Day features several giveaways.
