Six Tips for a Safe New Year’s Eve

Heading out for New Year’s Eve? Brendan Roszman, Health Promotion Specialist with the Department of Health Promotion and Wellness, offers essential tips to keep you safe while celebrating and welcoming the new year!

  1. Communicate Your Plans- Let people (family, friends, partners, etc.) know your plans for NYE and share your location with those you trust.
  2. Stay with Your Group- If you plan on going out, stick with your group of friends and try to stay with familiar people throughout the night.
  3. Charge Your Phone- Make sure your phone is fully charged before heading out and/or bring a portable charger.
  4. Drink Responsibly– If you decide to drink alcohol, follow these safety tips:
    • Stay hydrated and eat meals/snacks.
    • Keep your drink with you at all times.
    • Do not drink and drive. Have a plan for getting home, such as using a ride-share app like Uber or Lyft.
    • Keep track of alcoholic beverages you consume to prevent binge drinking and alcohol poisoning.
  5. Ride-Share App Safety– Safety tips for using ride-share apps:
    • Ride with friends if possible.
    • If you’re riding alone, wait with friends until you’re picked up, and let them know where you’re going.
    • Before entering the vehicle, confirm with the driver who the ride is for.
    • Track the route on the app to ensure the driver is taking you to the correct destination.
  6. Limit Location Changes- If you decide to go out to celebrate, we recommend staying in one location for the evening. If you plan to visit multiple places:
    • Stick with friends when traveling between locations.
    • Use well-lit main roads when walking.
    • Decide on your next destination before leaving your current location.

Have fun and be safe celebrating the new year! We can’t wait to see you back on campus in 2025!
