Capstone Creed Feedback

Denny Chimes and reflection in a puddle

The Capstone Creed reflects our shared values at The University of Alabama. To align the Capstone Creed with state law and to maintain its representation of our core values as a University community, a group of students has suggested edits and is seeking feedback on the proposed revision.

Current Creed

As a member of The University of Alabama community, I will pursue knowledge; act with fairness, integrity and respect; promote equity and inclusion; foster individual and civic responsibility; and strive for excellence in all I do.

Proposed Revision

As a member of The University of Alabama community, I will pursue knowledge; act with fairness, integrity, and respect; embrace and uphold the dignity of all; foster individual, collective and civic responsibility; and strive for excellence in all I do.

Brief History of the Creed

The Capstone Creed was first established by the Student Leaders Council in Spring 2000. The group aimed to encourage a conversation about campus culture among student leaders to identify the core values that uphold the University community. The Student Leaders Council acknowledged that the Capstone experience is more than just being enrolled in class. They understood that the University community goes beyond the campus itself. This group of talented students worked for three years to create a statement that captures the true spirit of a student at The University of Alabama and the values reflected by their experience.

The Creed has largely held its original form, with the last updates being made in Spring 2016. In Fall 2019, the Capstone Creed Initiative was established by the Student Government Association to create a dialogue surrounding the Capstone Creed and its meaning. Although the Creed was not changed in 2019, the meaning of it was heightened through these efforts.

The Capstone Creed is often celebrated in the spring during Capstone Creed Week, which serves as a reminder to all students of the values that our community believes in.
