The Crimson White (CW) has been a longstanding staple here at the Capstone since 1894. Alice has been publishing magazine editions since 2015. These and six other student-run media outlets are advised and supported by UA Student Media in the Division of Student Life. These students are gaining valuable real-life experience outside the classroom, and they’re winning awards while they’re at it!
This weekend, several of them were recognized for their work in student journalism through the College Media Business and Advertising Managers (CMBAM) and the Southeastern Journalism Conference (SEJC). Student Media won 3rd overall for Best Rate Card or Media Kit through the CMBAM. Through SEJC, Alice won 3rd place overall for Best College Magazine, and The Crimson White won 6th place for Best College Website. Individual students won the following awards:
- Best Arts and Entertainment Writer, 1st place, Jeffrey Kelley
- Best Sports Writer, 1st place, Ashlee Woods
- Best Opinion Writer, 4th place, Alex Jobin
- Best News Writer, 6th place, Isabel Hope
When asked about their work, Ashlee Woods said, “Working for The Crimson White has been nothing but an amazing experience. I’ve had the chance to cover one of the best athletic programs in the country. It’s a blessing to have my work recognized.”
“The Crimson White provides me with an amplified voice through which I can connect with people and issues that I would not be able to otherwise. I also view the CW as a platform for effecting change and progress here at UA and in our broader community,” said Alex Jobin. “To receive recognition for my efforts to tackle the issues that so many of us care about here on campus is extremely encouraging and only makes me want to work harder for myself and my peers.”
